Angus O'Callghan in Profile
History and Art Photographer Angus O’Callaghan is presenting five images from his Marvellous Melbourne Collection at this Spring. The images reflect another era, a small period of time, no doubt, in Melbourne’s history, yet the difference between 1970 and now is quite noticeable, and, therefore, should be of interest to many people, particularly Melburnians.

Circa 1970 Angus walked the streets of our city and its environs photographing places and people that reflected the life of the city: its urban scapes, its everyday citizens and those with fame, its changing migrant influences, and important events of the time. It was the first of Angus O’Callaghan’s travels into serious photography armed with a box-shaped camera with a fixed standard lens. The camera was a $45 Yashicaflex using 120 size film. It had many limitations but proved to have a superb lens. Its waist –level viewfinder and silent shutter made it unobtrusive and mostly unnoticed by those being photographed.

In 1970 the images were meant for a coffee table book entitled Marvellous Melbourne, but circumstances at the time denied its publication. It was Lynne O’Callaghan (the photographers wife) who in 2006 discovered a hidden box containing the Marvellous Melbourne negatives. Realising the historical importance of these she insisted something be done so the images could be viewed which has in turn lead to the exhibition of these rare glimpses of our great city. Each image is black and white which gives a timeless appeal.

It has been twenty years since Angus O’Callaghan retired but his hobby of photography has also been part of his professional life. With many successful assignments behind him in commercial enterprise and exhibitions as well as a Diploma in Photography, Angus O’Callaghan still holds great regard for his first baby ‘The Marvellous Melbourne’ images.

Angus O’Callaghan hopes that you enjoy this rare glimpse into Melbourne’ past.
Limited edition prints of these images are available now at this exhibition only.
The photographer is available to autograph prints where required.

Due to these images already being framed behind glass, it was difficult for the hotel to justly photograph them for the website.  We suggest that you see them in the flesh at the hotel to get the most enjoyment out of them.
