Sylvia Mair
in Profile
With a background in science, Sylvia holds a Ph D in
physics. After working for more than ten years with CSIRO she embarked on
a career in the visual sciences. Sylvia’s earlier artistic
career was in print-making and she has mastered a number of techniques
such as lino-cut and etching. In 1989 she travelled to Tokyo where she
spent four years studying wood-block printing and lithography.
Since returning to Australia, Sylvia’s work has evolved from print-making
to collage and finally painting. Through her experience in Japan and
working with the earlier media, she has come to appreciate the value of
restraint and simplification. This can be seen in her present work.
Throughout her artistic career, Sylvia has had numerous successful
exhibitions. In 2004 she won The Continental Hotel Fifth Annual Art Prize.
The same year she also won the Richard Riordan Memorial Prize for life
drawing. Her most recent solo exhibition ‘Animal Heads’ was held in June
2007 at Intrude Gallery, Fitzroy.
